Saraswati, the consort of Brahma, is the Goddess of purity — knowledge — fine arts — music and is temperamentally calm, reliable and soft. She is the one that gave language to the human race. Therefore, she is also known as Vac or Vach (meaning word). The language of the Aryans’ Sanskrit both spoken and written is attributed to her.

She is portrayed as a fair-skinned, very beautiful woman dressed always in white with ornaments of gold and pearls, sitting on a lotus. She has four hands but is sometimes also shown with only two. The main hands are always playing the veena, and the third holds the counting beads of prayer — a mala of rudraksh — or even a kamandal. The fourth one has the four ‘Vedas’, the symbol of the greatest knowledge anyone can attain. As she is the Power of Brahma, she is the one who gave the knowledge of these holy body to Brahma himself who is also always shown as holding the ‘Vedas’.
